Background to South Kerrier Alliance –

The Market and Coastal Towns Initiative

April 2009

Helston, together with its surrounding parishes, was one of the first towns to participate in the Market and Coastal Towns initiative (MCTi).  This was an innovative community based regeneration programme for market and coastal towns and their surrounding areas, administered by the South West Regional Development Agency.
The initiative was led by and driven forward by the communities themselves and focused on the development of healthy, vibrant and sustainable towns.  Originally supported by the Market and Coastal Towns Association, the 16 Cornish towns which have been through the community planning process are now supported by the Cornwall Towns Association through facilitation of networking and the dissemination of best practice.
Today South Kerrier Alliance encompasses all the parishes of South Kerrier.  With the help of hundreds of people in the area, working in partnership with local organisations and councils, a community strategic plan has been put together, central to which is a 20 year vision for the area.  It is supported by key areas of activity and projects which will help deliver the vision.  The plan was published in 2006 and forms the structure and focus for those helping to turn the vision into reality.
